Preview of Fraser Coast Chronicle’s Interview with Jersey Boys Australia’s New ‘Frankie’ Alternate–Matthew Backer!

July 9th, 2011

Matthew BackerFraser Coast Chronicle has a terrific interview with JERSEY BOYS Australia’s new Frankie Valli alternate, Matthew (Matty) Backer, who plays the role twice each week–at the Saturday matinee and the Sunday evening performances. Here’s a sneak peek:

When former Maryborough boy Matty Backer got a call from his agent to say he had scored a lead role in one of the most successful musicals in the world, he knew he’d made the big time.

The Chronicle journalist turned actor is currently making headlines in the Australian version of Broadway hit Jersey Boys.

It’s his first gig since graduating from the prestigious National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney last year and he couldn’t be happier.

“I know it sounds corny but I honestly keep pinching myself,” Matty said.

“It’s crazy – I still can’t believe it.”

Auditions for the musical started in March.

Matty had to get through five gruelling rounds, one of which included a three hour workshop with the crew to see he could sing.

What followed was an anxious week where Matty waited to hear back from the crew who had sent his auditions tapes to the real life man behind the lead character – Frankie Valli.

  2. I’ve just seen Matthew for the second time in the role of Frankie Valli and he is superb! The audience loved him and he didn’t put a foot – or a note – wrong!
