It’s always a bit dangerous to call a show “perfect.†But in this case, the risk is minimal, at least in the view of this observer.“Jersey Boys,†which has settled in for a run at Philadelphia’s Forrest Theatre, has managed to captivate audiences from its opening moments through its spectacular close — and don’t dare leave when you think it’s over, because it’s not quite.
So what is it about this tale of the rise, fall and rise of The Four Seasons singing group? What gives it the ability to have garnered the Tony, Grammy and Olivier awards?
Certainly, the human story of four blue collar guys who make it to the top.
Definitely the music that a generation has loved, and that has endured.
And in the case of the national tour, directed by Des McAnuff, that opened in Philadelphia to wild audience approval, the pacing and spectacular staging.
The catwalk set works perfectly and the lighting is just right.
The heavy lifting relies pretty much on the actor who plays Frankie Valli from his more innocent days to his ascendancy as a king of hits. And Brad Weinstock is more than capable of that lifting. He’s got the voice, the stage presence and that indefinable something that makes audiences like him as well as admire his talent.
