Steve Gouveia and Ryan Jesse Talk About the Jersey Boys Phenomenon!
May 6th, 2010The city of Providence is soon to experience the phenomenon known as JERSEY BOYS! The megahit musical will be playing at the Providence Performing Arts Center from May 12-June 6. Two JB cast members, Steve Gouveia and Ryan Jesse, share their thoughts on starring in the award-winning musical. Here’s a preview:
WarwickOnline.com: Steve Gouveia, who plays Nick Massi, is from the original Broadway show and has been with the show since it opened at the La Jolla Playhouse in California.
Did he think the musical would ever be the overwhelming success it has become?
“No way,” he said. “I thought we would be lucky if we made our money back.”
Why has this show about former teen idol, and now popular senior citizen idol, so popular?
“It’s not just the music, which is great,” he said. “It’s the book. It’s a great story. And everything comes together perfectly. This show has been popular with people who hate the theatre. We are finding new audiences every night. People leave the show and head to the box office to get tickets for later in the run. We’ve found many people who have seen the show 20 or 30 times.”
He swears that there is a guy who has seen it 100 times.
EdgeBoston.com: Ryan Jesse, a 25 year-old Arizona native, spoke with EDGE about the show and the character -Bob Guadio – he portrays.
“He’s the writer of the group, he’s the youngest of the four, and he’s the last to join,” Jesse says. “He launched the group, but he didn’t do it alone. They all needed each other.”
Jesse enjoys the opportunity to take on a different identity when he is performing.
“I get to put my life on hold for two hours out of the day and go into a totally different world,” Jesse explained. “To entertain an audience is the greatest feeling in the world.”
Jesse remains in awe of the scale of Jersey Boys.
“The role is well-written, the whole show is well-written. It’s incredible music, incredible choreography. It’s really a dream come true to be able to do this,” Jesse added.
Can’t wait to catch up with the tour for 3 shows in Austin in September. Oh and I think there are now a couple of 100+ show folks…Frances in Canada is over 100 for sure.
