TONIGHT is your chance to see J. Robert Spencer’s directorial debut of his feature film FARM GIRL IN NEW YORK at the Big Apple Film Festival at 6PM at Tribeca Cinemas!
Also, as reported last night, Bobby will be appearing on the TODAY Show around 9:30AM this morning to talk about the film!!
Here’s a synopsis of the film: Sam and Matt flee their small mid-western town of ‘Shickville,’ for New York City, where hot girls roam the streets! After months of failure they come up with the idea to hold a FAKE AUDITION to meet women. Hilarity ensues when dozens of hot, talentless, babes show up competing for a job that doesn’t exist. When one of the actresses wins Sam’s heart at the audition, Sam is inspired to write a play. Next thing you know Sam and Matt are rehearsing a play. Unfortunately they have no idea what they’re doing. With the help of some of the interesting people and places you find in theatre, they just may have a Broadway Hit and fall in love along the way.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Does anyone know what time the film ends and/or if 6 PM is an accurate start time? I’d love to see the film, but have a firm commitment at 8 PM the same evening.

Oh, I so wanted to go see this film but I have a ticket for Jersey Boys on November 15th. It will be my last time I see JLY as Frankie. I wish I could be in two places at once.

I listened to Bobby’s interview on the podcast and it was great. His enthusiasm for this film is quite infectious. I wish I could be there to see it and to share in the excitement.

I bought my ticket to FGINY on-line early yesterday, but never received confirmation via e-mail. I made several calls, first to the theatre, then to the NY Film Festival (everyone was nice, but not knowledgeable), and finally contacted a Natasha Bishop at [email protected], and she e-mailed a confirmation within minutes. From speaking with the various people, I hear I’m not the only one that had this problem.
And Bobby, yeah, you were great on the Podcast. Glad you clarified about halfway through who Schecky is…your partner Jeff Schechter.

I just saw Bobby on the Today Show. I never realized how funny he is. Always knew he is a great guy, extraordinary performer and extremely wonderful to his fans. Saw a funny side of him on the show and in the clips of the movie.
Hope he has every success with this movie. I can’t wait to see it. Howard, maybe you could do a little review for those of us not able to see it tonight.

Bobby, so glad you paid homage to Joe Grano. He was my best friend’s boss’s boss at PaineWebber for so many years and is really a remarkable human being. He is a decorated Green Beret, philanthropist(particularly for educational causes), and the first Chairman of the Homeland Security Advisory Council. You can see him on the Tony tape standing right next to Frankie Valli as Michael David is accepting “Best Musical”.
The film seems hilarious, Bobby. Can’t wait.

California just got to see Bobby on the Today show. He was so adorable! It’s obvious he’s very excited for his film, as he should be. 1000 congrats, Bobby! Let’s hope that West Coasters get to see it someday.

It was a very fun evening tonight. I was there for the film and the Q & A session, but had another commitment, so left before the cast party. Fans extraordinaire Pat Palumbo and friend Joan, Norene and John Howard (still trying to convince those guys to do a “before and after” w/me on Wheel of Fortune), Audrey Rockman, Kathy Bartsch, Charles Alexander, David Cace and Frank Rovello–i.e., the usual suspects!
Several of the actors in the film were present, as was executive producer Joe Grano. Bobby’s beautiful wife and son (who settled in for a long winter’s nap as soon as the film started and slept peacefully through the whole movie and the Q & A session) also graced the red carpet.
I generally am not a huge fan of Lucille Ball-type slapstick, but this physical comedy was indeed funny and did contribute to the story–and was for more mature audiences. Alison Munn was wonderful as Mary, Jeff Shecter’s (Sam’s) love interest. Bobby himself showed a totally different side than his Nick Massi, and was very funny, especially as a waiter in an early scene. The audience also roared with a pratfall later on, which he was asked by an audience member (Frank Rovello, was that you?) to deomonstrate so that we knew it wasn’t a stunt double (he did).
I thought the biggest scene stealers were Michael Longoria (cast somewhat against type) and Dave McCoy, the former security guard at the Jersey Boys’ stage door.
The original music was great, written by, among others, our own aspiring Henry Mancini, Tituss Burgess.
Bobby himself described the film as a cross between “Wedding Crashers” and “Waiting for Guffman”. I also saw elements of “The Producers”, “Animal House” and the David Schwimmer/Jason Lee comedy “Kissing a Fool.”
Bobby said the film was shot in 23 days, besting budget by 3 days. Well, that’s about the time it took to shoot Oscar winners “Marty” and “Million Dollar Baby”).
My colleagues above–what went on at the cast party? Those are usually the best stories. It was Norene’s birthday today, so I’m assuming they had some sort of testimonial dessert buffet in her honor!! Did any lampshades go on anyone’s head??

Yes Howard it was I who asked that question. The answer confirmed for us that Bobby does his own stunts and is a contortionist extraordinaire. As for the movie, I can’t remember the last time I laughed so much. At one point my laughing caused a snort, can’t get a higher rating in my book. As for the cast party, there was no testimonial, however there was plenty of free vodka being handed out by some not so unattractive young ladies.

Being a CPA whose primarly role is to attest to the statements of others, yes Frank Rovello laughed so often and hard he did snort. I joined him. One couldn’t help it, the movie was that funny. Congratulations to everyone in the movie, but especially to Bobby Spencer for his acting and his directing. He is on the one hand a natural, but on the other hand extraordinarily gifted. And when one combines those talents with his hard work and dedication, the future is so bright for this young man. And he was so gracious at the reception after the movie, going out of his way to say hello and chat with all the JB fans in attendance.
