Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons and Jersey Boys Red Hot on Billboard Chart!

Re-entering is the original Broadway cast recording of the show, while a greatest-hits album from the Valli and the 4 Seasons arrives in the top 50, marking each act’s highest chart position in decades.
“The Very Best of Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons” debuts at No. 41 with 6,000 copies sold in the week ending June 22 (up 457 percent), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s the highest-charting set for either the 4 Seasons or Valli since 1976 and 1967, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Broadway show’s cast album re-enters at No. 149 (2,000, up 72 percent). It’s the best sales frame for the album since Dec. 23, 2012. “Jersey Boys” remains the fifth-largest-selling cast recording in SoundScan’s 23-year history (1.4 million). The set has peaked at No. 85 in a 62-week run. On the Cast Albums chart, the set jumps 7-3, marking its best rank this year; on the chart since 2006, it’s spent an astounding 78 weeks at No. 1.
Next week, the soundtrack to the “Jersey Boys” movie will arrive on the Billboard 200. Released June 23, it features music from both the film and the Broadway show. Industry sources forecast the album to sell around 15,000 copies in the week ending June 29. Such a start would likely translate to a top 25 debut on the Billboard 200; the chart will update on Billboard.com on July 3.
We just saw the movie today. It was so, so good!!! The cast was terrific, not just musically but their characters were so believable and enjoyable. We saw the play a few years ago, too,and the movie in many ways was better because there are so many dimensions that can be shown on film that can’t be shown on stage.

I saw the movie tonight for the third time and will go back again. The award worthy acting and of course the music are both beyond fabulous! One interesting thing is when the movie is over and the lights go on, many of the true fans sit in their seats until all the credits and the music are over…….also,
I went out and bought the CD ( movie soundtrack) as soon as it was released and cannot get enough of it ..
There are so many stories yet to be told and I am hoping for a weekly TV series on the stories behind every recording..The story on a song “come si bella” could be an hour episode… as many others.. more more more Jersey Boys

My sister and I saw movie yesterday. It was wonderful!!! Loved it.We were a little scared because the reviews were mixed – probably written by a 20-year old who had no clue of the era back then. Loved every minute.

Correct me if I’m wrong but is this now the seventh straight decade that Frankie Valli has charted in some form?

I think you really had to stretch the rules for there to have been a 2000s chart entry, Ray. Seems like the first remix of “Beggin’”, the “Piloosky” edit, charted in Europe but not the US, and the Madcon cover charted with it in the US, but the best you could have had there was instrumental track sampling, and I got the impression the instrumental tracks were identically arranged but rerecorded rather than sampled. That said, it is phenomenal by any measure to have had chart hits of any kind on any chart, single or album or whatever, from 1956 to 2014, which is now over 58 years. I’m trying to think of others who have had that long of a run. I think you would have to go way back to Whitburn’s 1890-1954 Pop Memories book artist by artist to answer the question. Maybe there’s still a column in Billboard that we might want to follow, if the “young-uns” are even inclined to notice. History doesn’t seem that important to kids today.

I can’t remember if Fred Bronson is still writing a column like that. He excitedly covered the first chart single hit to chart for “Four Seasons”, “December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)”, combining 27 weeks in 1975-1976, and 27 weeks in 1994-1995. Has any other chart entry entered in four different years to this day? And is it stretching it to consider it to be the same recording, as some tracks were used, but not others?

As they might say in NJ, Che’? Or in S. CA, Que’? Maybe I had too much coffee, or maybe I’m overanalyzing the question Ray asked, like the many licensed professionals who post here are trained and tend to do. If the question is, did FV4S have a Hot 100 appearance in the 2000s, then the answer is no. If you mean any chart, any remake using original tracks, in any country in the world, the answer is yes. And that in any event, any Billboard chart appearances stretching from 1956 to 2014 is phenomenal. Perhaps that explains it better.
