Friday Flashback: Frankie Valli’s Swearin’ to God!

May 20th, 2011

This was the first time I have ever seen this late 1970s Frankie Valli “Swearin’ To God” clip, with the introduction by Cousin Brucie. According to the Youtube poster, this segment was being taped for a TV special titled “On Stage.” Have any of you seen this program that was hosted by Cousin Brucie before?

“Swearin’ to God” was Valli’s follow-up to the chart-topping “My Eyes Adored You.” Thirty-six years ago this week, the song, written by Bob Crewe and Denny Randell, debuted on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and peaked at #6 during the summer of 1975.

Another one of those OMG music memories–The first time I heard “Swearin’ to God” was at my very first Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons concert in Columbus in May, 1975! When Frankie announced this was his new single, the crowd went insane at Veterans Memorial Auditorium to this new disco beat! My mom, who was at the concert with me, turned to me and said, “Betcha this one is going to be his biggest hit EVER!”

I remember during the summer of ’75, Frankie was, well, ubiquitous, on TV: Midnight Special, Mike Douglas Show, Merv Griffin Show, Dinah Shore, Joey & Dad (anyone remember that brief Joey Heatherton show?) as “Swearin’ to God” climbed the chart!

What about your “Swearin’ to God” memories?

  2. Incredible clip! I’ve never seen it before, and thats pretty neat about cousin brucie at the beginning. It looks pretty authentic since Bruce Morrow (Cousin Brucie’s real name) is listed in the credits at the end as Executive Producer. But if you really wanted to double check and see if cousin brucie really was on the TV segment you could always try calling in to his radio show on sirius xm radio!
