JERSEY BOYS national tour plays Madison, Wisconsin January 3-8 at the Overture Center for the Arts. Lindsay Christians has a great interview with Kristen Paulicelli, who plays Mary Delgado in the company. Check Out a preview of the interview below:
What about your primary character, Mary? Have you done any digging with that role?
Kristen Paulicelli: I’m the first woman that they introduce as a main character in the show. She helps Frankie get his start and find his celebrity. When they first meet he says I’m going to spell (his stage name) “Valley” and she says no, you have to spell it “Valli.” You’re Italian, you have to show who you are.
She’s a strong personality and tells it like it is.
Mary wanted to be a singer herself, but she could never get out of town, the neighborhood. She was coaching Frankie to do what she could never do. Then his career took off and she was just his wife with three kids, but she wanted to be a singer.
It definitely helps to build her character too in those moments when she’s mad at Frankie. You can place that anger.
