Jersey Boys Returns to Charlotte; It’s the ‘Rocky’ Story, According to Bob Gaudio!

February 17th, 2012

The JERSEY BOYS first national tour returns to Charlotte, North Carolina’s Belk Theater, opening Wednesday, February 22 with 24 performances through March 11. Correspondent
Julie Reed Bell has a preview, which includes an interview with original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio! Here’s a sneak peek:

“It’s the Rocky story,” he says.

He also credits the creative team that’s been part of the project since the beginning – including co-writers Marshall Brickman (who also co-wrote “Annie Hall”) and Rick Elice, and choreographer Sergio Trujillo, whom Gaudio calls an “unsung hero.”

Called “the quintessential music maker” by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Gaudio’s song “Sherry” launched an incredible string of hits for the Four Seasons in the early 1960s.

When “Jersey Boys” was first coming together, Gaudio says, both he and Valli stayed hands off.

“We would’ve had issues with some of the moments – things can get tender. If we had been on the scene we might’ve steered it the wrong way,” he says. “Now, it’s warts and all – and it works. Ninety to 95 percent of the story is true, which is close enough. Any closer might be scary.”
