JLY & Christian Hoff’s Thoughts Over Brunch
March 4th, 2007Michael Grossberg of The Columbus Dispatch fills everyone in on the recent American Theatre Critics Association meeting, which included a three-hour brunch at Sardi’s Restaurant. According to Grossberg, as the Broadway actors and critics broke bread together, some tales were told. Grossman had the opportunity to speak with several Broadway stars, including 2006 Tony winners John Lloyd Young and Christian Hoff:
John Lloyd Young: The up-and-comer is the 2006 Tony winner for best musical actor for his Broadway debut as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys. Here’s what the 31-year-old actor said:
In the span of one year, everything I dreamed of my entire life has come true.
We’re invited everywhere. My favorite was being flown by CBS in a private jet with Katie Couric to the West Coast for a surprise performance for a Los Angeles benefit. But I’ve got a lot of time ahead of me, so I have to find a way to not be too spoiled.
And I can buy my groceries now. I’m still tenaciously holding onto my starving actor’s perspective, because I’m Catholic.
Christian Hoff: This Jersey Boy also won a Tony (best supporting actor), but was far from an overnight success. He made his debut on Broadway in 1993 in a bit part in The Who’s Tommy. Christian stated:
Whether you have stardom or you don’t, it’s about discipline and commitment. And the greatest part about it is the work. I’ve had a love relationship with acting and the people I was doing it for since I started when I was 8. And whether I’m in a starring role or playing Pinball Lad 2, I approach it with the same gusto.
You have a long way to go to be too spoiled, John Lloyd. You sign autographs, take pictures with your fans, and thank people even for the smallest gestures. And when you recognize someone in the audience, make eye contact and flash your trademark megawatt smile, it makes anyone feel like a million bucks. Given your success this past year, your humility is refreshing.
