Through February 23, John Lloyd Young is performing at Café Carlyle. Check out a sneak peek of the reviews from his amazing debut:

Regina Weinreich, The Huffington Post: From beginning to end, John Lloyd Young’s performance at the Café Carlyle was a love affair attuned to the Valentine’s Day of your youth. “You’re Just Too Good to be True,” the Tony-winning original “Frankie Valli” from Jersey Boys crooned, to “How Can I Be Sure,” followed by an homage to the room itself. Richard Rodgers lived here, Elaine Stritch still lives here, now it’s “My Turn.” Noting too the canvas murals by costume designer Marcel Vertes, who died in 1961, the dimple-chinned Young seemed to be pinching himself that he would now be working in such a swell place.

You can be crucified for breaking convention, he said, dispensing with such clichés as walking off stage only to come back for an encore of “Hold Me” and “Let’s Stay Together.” He just went for it. I, for one, did not want the night to end.

Stephen Holden, New York Times: Mr. Young, who has the look and attitude of a sensitive slick-haired late-1950s street kid (he is 37), achieved Broadway glory playing Frankie Valli in “Jersey Boys.” He has a disciplined one-in-a-million high tenor shading into falsetto that he can direct through the stratosphere with a precision that few male singers deploy with any comfort. Listening to him sing the 1969 Eddie Holman hit, “Hey There Lonely Girl,” conjured memories of very late nights spent leaning against a jukebox four decades ago in a smoke-filled bar hearing a cry that distilled the post-adolescent pining that brought me there.

That kind of extreme romanticism and the male vulnerability it signifies have all but disappeared from pop. If any single voice can bring back a vocal sound that is synonymous with ’50s and ’60s nostalgia, it may be Mr. Young’s.
