More Reflections from John Lloyd Young

May 17th, 2006

The Jersey Journal’s Arts Editor Jeff Theodore talked to two Jersey City actors who were nominated for this year’s Tony Awards—Elisabeth Withers-Mendes, from The Color Purple, and Jersey Boys’ John Lloyd Young.

Young learned the news with his girlfriend at his side in their Newport-area residence. The nominees for the major awards were announced on the CBS “Early Show.” Now, his girlfriend has to think about a Tony dress, and Young said he’d buy it for her.

Young, an odds-on Tony favorite after glowing reviews on his performance in Jersey Boys said he became surprisingly apprehensive about his chances as the big announcement came in. He stated,

“I’ve watched the Tony Awards nominations show for years and there were always four names in a category. So, when they got to the fourth name in my category I was thinking ‘That was it.’ I forgot that they’ve changed it to five names per category. That’s when they announced my name last.”

Young noted that it’s a tough call to predict his chances of winning a Tony:

“I think my category is one of the toughest ones this year. But the way I see it, a year ago I was working as an usher for a theater show. So, I’ve already won.”
