Rick Elice’s Peter and the Starcatcher Soars in NeverLand!

This goes without saying, but Rick Elice is a master storyteller! That’s one of the reasons so many of us love to be transported to Belleville, back in the days of Eisenhower and Rocky Marciano, for repeat visits to Jersey Boys, right?

So, of course, we expected some fun, some joy, a great story, and some mild magic while watching Peter and the Starcatcher, but honestly, we were completely blown away by the fast-paced and fantastically funny and witty prequel to the story of Peter Pan! The production has it all: a totally sharp, multitalented, multitasking, and absolutely sensational cast; top notch and very unique set design and lighting, and stunning direction by Roger Rees and Alex Timbers!

The almost entirely male ensemble cast, who play multiple parts so marvelously, tell a whimsical story that takes place on a 19th century ocean voyage that includes magical “starstuff,” pirates, orphans, mermaids (in drag!), and the backstory of Peter Pan, Tinker Bell, and Captain Hook!

Honestly, we need a Part 2 blog post to highlight each and every fantastic cast member! The chemistry and comedic timing of this ensemble was priceless! Among the standouts are Adam Chanler-Berat, who is genuinely convincing as “Boy,” the 13-year-old without a name, who eventually becomes “Peter” and “Molly,” played by Celia Keenan-Bolger, who is truly fabulous as the feisty, brave, spirited, and adventurous shipmate who befriends the orphan boys. As “Black Stache,” Christian Borle absolutely shines in his portrayal as the over-the-top, scene-stealing pirate who turns into Captain Hook–so much so–that the Tech Half and I both mentioned, “Stache should win the Tony!” Okay, the last Tony Award prediction I made was back at La Jolla Playhouse in 2004 during the Jersey Boys intermission after seeing Christian Hoff! ;-)

Although the story took place in 1885, the modern cultural references throughout the play had the audience howling! Everything from Ayn Rand jokes, Starbucks, Cadillacs, to my personal favorite: TTFN!

Truth be told, Peter and the Starcatcher is one show that I hope you all can experience for yourselves! Seeing it live will leave you only not laughing throughout the evening, but thanks to the brilliant writing of Mr. Rick Elice, you will jump aboard and be completely transported and inspired by the clever story and the fantastic antics that take place on the stage!

Thank you and massive congratulations to Rick Elice!

  1. Susie, I agree with all of your comments above. I had the pleasure of seeing the show in its infancy in La Jolla in 2009 (when the show had Starcatchers, not just one – I guess that was before the economic slowdown), and I was captivated. Equally importantly, so was stubbletwo (13 at the time) who spent the whole show leaning forward on the edge of his seat. Kids and adults alike were enthralled, and there was a palpable sense of bonding and community felt throughout the audience (particularly after the opening of Act II, but I won’t give anything away ;-) ).

And even back then one could tell that Christian Borle’s performance was Tony-worthy; I made the same prediction as you! Here’s wishing all the best for all involved. ;-)

  2. Susie, I couldn’t agree with your fabulous review more.Rick is a genius, and this show is magical. I saw it downtown, and can’t wait to see it again on Broadway. As if we needed any proof, Jersey Boys was no one hit wonder!
